Portal Pavilion
Filtered Light

This information pavilion pays homage to the historical relevance of Logroño by nodding to the historical Calle Portales and the Iglesia de San Bartolomé. The Calle Portales is flanked by arcades with subtle play of shadow and light. The portal of Iglesia de San Bartolomé is exquisitely preserved and introduces a dynamic geometrical pattern which draws visitors inward.

Since the Plaza de las Escuelas Trevijano is situated at the intersection of Calles Portales and Calle Once de Junio, we wanted to employ a pavilion that communicated with the pedestrians at all angles while maintaining an intimate relationship with the plaza.

The facade is used as a display which communicates to all sides of the street. The panels are used as wayfinding, communicating to visitors about the history of the festival and where interventions are located. The interior of the pavilion is used as an information gallery which displays historical paintings, photos, and brochures of Logroño. Light filters through small openings and a gentle curve eases the transition through the information gallery which provides a sense of play both for children and adults as they walk through the pavilion.

The pavilion is composed of simple construction, all cuts are straight, flat, and modular. Only 31 panels are needed to construct the pavilion.

Basalt

Like basalt rock formations that create a juxtaposing identity from the same material, this housing complex implements modulated yet dynamic unit types taking cues from the rhythmic aggregation of basalt rocks.
