Basalt
Aggregate Housing

Like basalt rock formations that create a juxtaposing identity from the same material, this housing complex implements modulated yet dynamic unit types taking cues from the rhythmic aggregation of basalt rocks. The aim was to create a rhythmic contrast between the street fabric and the internal space of the housing complex; two juxtaposing elements act as a cohesive whole. The shifting of the units also create balconies and light wells through the entire height of the housing complex. The unit configuration provides a gradual expansion of space as you enter the unit, where each unit expands to the view of the city and street.
